Type 1 vs Type 2 Diabetes: Same Name. Completely Different Disease
People often say,
"I have diabetes."
But there isn't just one kind.
Understanding the difference changes how we approach treatment, nutrition, expectations, and even long-term health.
Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition.
The immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
As a result, the body produces little to no insulin. Without insulin, glucose cannot enter the cells. People with Type 1 diabetes require insulin therapy for survival. It commonly develops during childhood or adolescence but may also appear in adults.
Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is far more common. Here, the pancreas often still produces insulin. The problem is that the body's cells stop responding effectively. This is called insulin resistance.
Initially, the pancreas compensates by producing more insulin. Over time, it becomes exhausted, and blood sugar begins rising.
Why this matters Although both conditions result in high blood sugar, their causes are completely different.
Which also means... Their nutritional strategies, their monitoring, their medications, and their long-term management differ significantly. This is one reason why copying someone else's diabetes diet rarely works. Another form many women don't know enough about Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy because pregnancy hormones naturally increase insulin resistance.
For many women, blood sugar returns to normal after delivery. However, it can increase the future risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. That's why follow-up after pregnancy is just as important as care during pregnancy.

Diabetes is never "one-size-fits-all."
